Position Summary:

The Arc, the nation’s leading nonprofit providing a rich history of advocacy, programs and events representing a national network of state and local chapters serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), is seeking an Annual Fund Manager for its national office in Washington, DC. 


This energetic and talented development professional will join our growing fundraising efforts, will work closely with the Director of Individual Philanthropy and will have an opportunity to take ownership for planning and implementing sustainable fundraising strategies and tactics for the annual individual appeal program.  The Manager will identify, cultivate, and solicit donors through a variety of philanthropic channels including annual direct mail, online and acquisition. This position will appreciate the creativity involved in being expert at analyzing data to define program success and inform future strategies. The Manager will oversee the implementation of a donor database for data entry and gift processing, with an associate to provide administrative support. The successful candidate must be a strong fundraising writer, have experience with direct mail and understand what it means to be hands on from message creation to dissemination and acknowledgement/follow up.


This is a newly created position at The Arc.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.


Specific Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Co-lead the vision and implementation of the annual individual appeal program.
  • Responsible for authoring all direct mail appeal package elements including, but not limited to, direct mail letters, emails, and donation page copy.
  • Responsible for donor research, cultivation, and stewardship of annual/mid-level donors; launching individual gifts campaigns through multiple channels; recordation/financial reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Team with the Major Gifts Officer on implementing a “moves management” plan for mid-level donors that may be stewarded to become major donors.
  • Responsible for budget creation, revenue projections and tracking for several key philanthropic channels including direct mail and acquisition.
  • Implement tools for evaluation for individual giving program including annual benchmarks.
  • Manage logistics and communications for events in collaboration with local chapters of The Arc.
  • Manage relationships with outside vendors, working closely with our marketing team and outside vendors.
  • Management and mentorship of the Development Associate.
  • Manage data for direct mail program, including building queries and recording activities for each constituent.
  • Accountable for meeting revenue goals for defined projects and keeping expenses within budget.



  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience, including supervisor experience.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Understanding of direct mail best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in a fundraising database and query building (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, especially donor interactions.
  • Talented fundraising letter writer.
  • Must be knowledgeable in planned giving and fundraising best practices. 
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Flexible and adapts to fast paced environment.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to and a passion for the work of The Arc.
  • 10% travel required
